Benefits of Silicone on the Hair

It seems as if silicone is the bad guy in the hair care industry. Everyone has a different story on how damaging or destructive it can be to the hair but little did you know silicone could be an amazing ingredient in your hair care products. There is one thing people tend to forget and that is that with every con there is a pro. What most people think is that there is one type of silicone and instantly assume that it is horrible for the hair. But did you know there are many types of silicones?

There are a bunch of bad silicones used in common hair care products that are super destructive to the hair, especially curly hair. Keep in mind that as bad as those silicones are to the hair the good ones surpass them in incredible results.

Now, how do we know a silicone is bad for the hair? Silicones are divided into two categories, water soluble and non- soluble in water. Some of the non- soluble silicones can still be used without damaging the hair.

Regular shampoo can remove the following easily:

  • dimethicone
  • dimethiconol
  • beheonoxy dimethicone

Some silicones to stay away from include:

  • simethicone
  • trimethicone
  • cyclomethicone
  • cyclopentasiloxane
  • trimethylsilylamodimethic one
  • trimethylsiloxysilicates

Good water- soluble silicones:

  • Methicone copolyol
  • Polysiloxane
  • Dimethicone Copolyol
  • PEG-Dimethicone
  • And any other 'cone starting with "PEG-"
